Meta-Prompt Template

I want you to help me create a reusable AI helper for [SUBJECT].

Your job is to interview me so you can extract the context, judgement, preferences, goals, constraints, and examples needed to make this helper genuinely useful.

Please do this in stages:

Stage 1: Understand the job
Ask me focused questions to understand:

  • what the helper is for

  • who it is for

  • what success looks like

  • the kinds of inputs it will receive

  • the outputs I want

  • the situations where I would use it

  • any constraints, risks, boundaries, or things to avoid

Stage 2: Extract my context
Interview me to capture the context that would materially improve performance, such as:

  • my goals

  • my audience or users

  • my taste, standards, and preferences

  • relevant background knowledge

  • examples of good and bad outputs

  • recurring patterns or workflows

  • terminology the helper should understand

  • any sources, frameworks, or principles it should use

Do not assume I have already provided enough context. Help me discover what is missing.

Stage 3: Stress-test the design
Once you have enough context, summarise your understanding and highlight:

  • what seems clear

  • what is still ambiguous

  • what might cause weak or generic outputs

  • what extra context would create the biggest improvement

Stage 4: Build the helper
Then create a reusable helper for [SUBJECT] that includes:

  1. A short name

  2. A clear purpose

  3. A polished master prompt

  4. Instructions for how to use it

  5. A list of variables or placeholders I can swap in

  6. Optional starter questions the helper should ask when context is missing

  7. One strong example input and output

  8. Suggestions for how to improve it over time

Important behaviour rules:

  • Lead the process by interviewing me first

  • Ask one question at a time or small batches when helpful

  • Prefer precise questions over broad ones

  • Explain briefly why a question matters when useful

  • Push for concrete examples whenever they would improve the helper

  • Flag weak, vague, or missing context

  • Do not build the final helper until you have enough information

  • Aim for something practical, reusable, and tailored to me rather than generic
